ANSI/TIA/EIA-606 : Administration Standard
for the Telecommunications Infrastructure of Commercial Buildings
The purpose and intent of this standard is to provide a uniform
administration scheme that is independent of applications,
which may change several times throughout the life of a building.
This standard establishes guidelines for owners, end users,
manufacturers, consultants, contractors, designers, installers,
and facilities administrators involved in the administration
of the telecommunications infrastructure or related administration
system. Published in 1993 this standard is now considered
out of date.
A new version is currently in progress, to be called ANSI/TIA/EIA
606-A. As it is a draft document, you cannot purchase it yet.
It is expected later this year.
The four classes of administration specified are based on
the complexity of the infrastructure being administered. In
addition, this Standard is modular and scalable to allow implementation
of various portions of the administration system as desired.
For example, a contractor placing the pathways may be responsible
for recording pathway information. After the pathway has been
placed, a different contractor installing the cabling may
be responsible for recording cabling information. A third
contractor might install fire stopping and be responsible
for recording information and labeling for that portion of
the infrastructure. The system owner should coordinate among
the various contractors to maintain a uniform method of administration
as specified in this Standard.
Class 1 addresses the administration needs of a premises
that is served by a single telecommunication room (TR) containing
its telecommunications equipment.
A class 2 system provides for telecommunications infrastructure
administration needs of a single building or tenant that is
served by a single or multiple TRs within a single building.
Class 3 addresses the administration needs of a campus, including
its buildings and outside plant elements.
Class 4 addresses the administration needs of a multi-site
system. Class 4 administration includes all elements of a
class 3 administration, plus an identifier for each site,
and optional identifiers for wide area network connections.
